Video gamers are raring to get their hands on new titles this holiday season with the long-awaited debut of Nintendo Co. Ltd.'s Wii and Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3.

But with only a limited number of the new consoles available in stores at their launch in November, the biggest payoff for game makers is likely to be software designed for older machines already in tens of millions of homes.

As a result, "Final Fantasy XII" from Square Enix, the hands-down holiday favorite for Sony's established PlayStation 2 console, could post blockbuster sales.

"That's going to be big," said Sam Kennedy, editor-in-chief of video game Web site 1UP.com, adding that the new title gives players more control on the battlefield.
